Lick of the Week – The Worlds Coolest Blues Guitar Chord Trick!
Let’s look at how to play one of the greatest blues chord riffs ever! This riff is similar to what T-Bone Walker or The Allman brothers play on the blues classic ‘Stormy Monday’. Not surprisingly it’s become known as the ‘Stormy Monday riff’.
It’s using fragments of two common dominant 9th chord shapes to create a distinctive and highly versatile chord move which you can use in almost any blues setting.
We’ll be learning the Stormy Monday riff in the key of G and applying it to a 12 bar blues in the key of G. Don’t forget to get used to playing it in other keys as well, this is very important.
Once you’ve learned the version I show you in this lesson, experiment with creating a few riff variations of your own. You can try changing the direction of the slide, sliding down ‘chromatically’ (in intervals of 1 fret at a time), picking out the notes
in the chord fragments seperately, there are many possibilities that can work well.
Have fun and remember if you want the tab worksheet for this lesson you can get it below.
